Mornington Wilderness Park 18-19 September 2013

We got to the turn off for Mornington and there were no signs about road closures so we turned off the Gibb and pulled up at the Mornington Wilderness Camp Information Kiosk. Yep, that's right, at the tin bus stop/bike shed with the two wat radio link to reception.
So it was all ten four rubber duck and we established that the camp was open for business, and in fact had not been impacted by the fires at all. Me thinks the guy at Mount Barnett was telling porkies... Anyway, the girl at reception asked if we wanted to book in for dinner at the restaurant (gracefully declined - $55 for roast lamb and lemon meringue pie) and told us it would take two hours to reach the park from where we were and that we needed to take care on the river crossings, especially in the last 20ks. So we set off down the much smoother road than we had become accustomed to, with me thinking it couldn't possibly take two hours to cover the 89ks. Silly Billies. Not sure that it took the full two, but it was definitely well over one hour of dry creek crossing after dry creek crossing (especially the last 20ks). Got to be the longest driveway in the world!
Anyway, we finally made it and set up camp for the next two nights. Old Vibratum paid us another visit somewhere over the last couple of days and left the front number plate hanging on by a single screw. Noticed it just i time to avoid losing it altogether.
Not sure exactly what I was expecting Mornington to be like, but I think we have been spoiled by El Questro and I was a little underwhelmed. Don't get me wrong, it is a really nice place, and if we had been going in the other direction and come here first we would probably have been giving it bigger wraps. Still worth the long drive in though. It reminds me a little of Torrumbarry with gorges, nature walks, hot showers, a bar and a restaurant in place of the water skiing.
